Last year when we visited New York, I grooved on the subway system. Last month in London I was similarly enamored of the Underground. I’m not sure exactly what the attraction is; for both systems it’s perhaps a combination of convenience, admiration of engineering prowess, and for the latter the iconic Underground map that ties in with my cartographic interests.
At any rate we were in London, and taking the Underground everywhere, and one of those places was the Tate Modern. In the museum gift shop I noticed that there was a set of Penguin books issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Underground. I chose John Lanchester’s What We Talk About When We Talk About The Tube because of the Raymond Carver reference. Now I wish I had just bought all twelve volumes. Or that I lived in London and could over a leisurely period of time take the Underground to the Tate and acquire a volume each visit.
